While the worst storms boaters have to deal with occur on the ocean, there are still plenty of storms to look out for further inland. Thunderstorms or tornadoes can pose a serious threat to your safety, especially if you are unprepared, and that’s why the experts at Nisswa Marine have created this storm prep guide.

Weather to Watch Out For

Always check the forecast before you go out on your boat. Some thunderstorms catch even meteorologists by surprise, so it’s usually a good idea to look at the radar every once in a while. Tornados can be even more unpredictable. While a watch will usually be issued if conditions are right, it can be difficult to determine whether a tornado will actually form, and where the storm will be if it does. If the forecast looks bad, consider rescheduling your boating trip.

Stocking Up on Safety Equipment

You should always pack an emergency kit when you go boating. Be sure to include a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flares, and other safety equipment. You should also have a way to receive weather alerts and call for help, such as a VHF radio or a cell phone. Lastly, make sure that everyone on your boat has a well-fitting life jacket.

Riding Out a Storm

If you’re out on the water when a storm hits, you should find the nearest shore and drop anchor. Make sure that everyone is wearing their life jackets, and have everyone huddle as low as possible near the center of the boat. This will reduce the risk of anyone falling overboard or being hit by lightning. You should then stow all gear and secure any hatches. Monitor your radio or cell phone for weather updates. Be ready to send a distress signal if anything goes wrong.
