There’s nothing like a day on the water, especially if it means the thrills and excitement of watersports! Wakeboarding in particular is an extremely popular watersport, but getting all the gear you need to enjoy it properly can be a hassle.

We here at Nisswa Marine want to help you get the most out of your watersports, so we’ve put together some of the basic accessories you’ll need for wakeboarding, below. The Basics

It helps to list the basics just to make sure everyone starts out on the same page, so obvious as it sounds, you’ll need a boat. A wake boat or surf boat is ideal, since they can maintain constant speeds and create a fun wake. You’ll also need to find the right wakeboard for you, which we’ve talked about before, and a towing cable to keep yourself tethered to the boat. Wakeboard boots or bindings will keep you on the wakeboard, which is equally important.

Safety Gear

Like any sport, wakeboarding can be dangerous without the proper safety gear.

Buoyancy Aids

The most common buoyancy aids will be life vests or life jackets, and you should always wear one when wakeboarding. If—or, more accurately, when—you fall, it can be extremely disorienting at best. In worse scenarios, you might end up dizzy and confused, either from the impact on the water or because of harder obstacles just below the surface. A life vest will ensure you stay at and above the surface of the water until help can arrive.

Helmet

Speaking of head trauma, it’s always best to plan for the worst. Because the water can get so murky, it’s impossible to be sure that there aren’t rocks, hard branches, or other hard or sharp objects hiding below the surface. A helmet will keep you safe in the unlikely event that your head ends up coming into contact with one of these.

Some helmets are designed specifically for wakeboarding, which we strongly recommend. They’re lightweight, water resistant, and well-ventilated.

Goggles

Your eyes are particularly vulnerable, so we recommend wearing well-fitted goggles. Even when wakeboarding in freshwater, your eyes might struggle to adjust and could be hurt by waterborne debris.

Swimsuit or Wetsuit

Ideally you’d wear a full-body wetsuit for wakeboarding, as these can provide extra comfort, warmth, and protection for your body. However, they can be inconvenient, so many wakeboarders choose to merely wear a swimsuit instead. This isn’t quite as safe, but it is an acceptable replacement that will keep you from getting waterlogged.
