With summer on the horizon, many Minnesota anglers are pulling their fishing boats out of storage and getting ready to fish the Land of 10,000 Lakes. If you’re among them, then you’re no doubt readying yourself and your fishing boat, but what about your tackle box? You should always make sure that your tackle box is stocked with everything you’re going to need when you head out onto the water.

Nisswa Marine is your Minnesota fishing boat dealer and we’ve been right here serving our customers on the shores of Nisswa Lake since the 1930s. Here are some of our top tackle box essentials so that you can be fully prepared for all of your summer fishing adventures.

Bobbers, Lures & Sinkers

Each of these three items is standard-issue for a tackle box, but it’s smart to double-check. And if you’re new to fishing, you may be wondering what to bring when it comes to bobbers, lures and sinkers.

Bobbers

Otherwise known as “floaters,” bobbers are lightweight devices that let you know when you’ve snared a fish on your hook. When the bobber sinks into the water, it’s time to reel in the line. The traditional style is a plastic red-and-white orb, but these won’t go very deep into the water. A slip bobber will slide up and down your line, letting you cast it more deeply. If you haven’t a bobber to your name, you can take a simple cork and insert a stick through it instead.

Lures

Every fisher worth their salt always keeps a smattering of lures on-hand for every eventuality. You might have a favorite type, but try to carry a variety of lures with you so you’re ready for anything. Some lures you may wish to include are top-water lures, spinners, spoons and minnow imitations.

Sinkers

The lightweight nature of your hook and its lure or worm means that it’s not likely to sink into the water of its own accord. That’s where a sinker comes in handy. These little items used to be made out of lead before we fully understood how toxic that metal can be to people, fish and wildlife. These days, sinkers are made from bismuth, brass, tungsten and steel instead. Carry many of them with you because they’re easy to lose.

Extra Line

No angler should go out on the water without some extra line handy! You never know when a powerful fish will snap your line in half as it bolts, or when you might catch your line on a submerged log and get it all tangled up. Keep some thin, clear line for calm lakes. If you’re going out on a choppier Great Lake, then have heavy-duty line with you.

More Hooks

A wide selection of hooks is advisable for your tackle box. J-hooks and French hooks, along with several hooks in different sizes, will prove useful to you, since different sizes of hooks are required to catch different sizes of fish.

Needle-Nosed Pliers

A pair of needle-nosed pliers is an indispensable tool for any fisher. You can pull a hook out of a fish or a splinter out of your skin with a good pair of pliers. You’ll undoubtedly find even more uses for them, so make sure you keep a pair in your tackle box at all times!

These are not the only items you’ll want to stash in your tackle box, but they should give you a good start.
